Spartan League Rules

League Type & Field Dimensions

  • The league type will be 7v7. Field size will be 55-65 yards long by 35-45 yards wide.

League Day & Times

  • Games will be played on Sundays. Game times will be afternoon and early evening game slots. If there is enough demand, games may be expanded to Sunday morning time slots.

Age Divisions

  • All teams will currently play in a Co-Ed Open (18+) division. In the future, we may add Co-Ed 30+, or other additional divisions if there is enough demand.

Game Length

  • Games will consist of two 25-minute halves with a 5-minute halftime, and 5 minutes at the conclusion of the game for changeover.

Rosters/Player Eligibility

  • The maximum number of players on the roster will be 14. Each team must have a minimum of 7 players on the roster to be eligible for league play.

  • All players must have signed the league liability waiver before playing in league matches.

  • A team can only use players from its roster for league matches.

Team Lineups

  • Lineups will consist of 7 total players; 6 field players and 1 goalkeeper.

  • This is a co-ed league, so teams must have at least 2 female players on the field at all times to play at full strength. If only 1 female player is present, the team must play down 1 player. If no female players are present, the game will be forfeit.

Substitutions

  • Substitutions are unlimited and can occur when play is stopped on dead ball situations, at the referee’s permission.

Game Play

  • No slide tackling is permitted. All players must remain upright on their feet when challenging an opponent for the ball. A slide that is not near an opponent is permitted.

  • Offside will be enforced between the “build out” line and goal, but not between midfield and the “build out” line.

  • If a player intentionally passes back to their goalkeeper, the goalkeeper may not use their hands to pick up the ball but can play the ball with their feet.

  • All other traditional rules, fouls and conduct violations for 11v11 will apply.

Equipment

  • Shin guards are mandatory.

  • Molded plastic/rubber cleats are allowed but not required. Metal cleats or screw-in studs are prohibited.

  • Teams should have matching color shirts/jerseys. If both teams are wearing the same, or very similar color shirts/jerseys, the visiting team listed on the schedule must change.

Conduct

  • Players, coaches and spectators are expected to act in the nature of good sportsmanship at all times. Spectators are prohibited from entering the field of play at any time during the match.

  • Players may receive a red card and be removed from the remainder of the match for the following offenses:

    • Receiving a second yellow card in the same match.

    • Spitting at another player, coach, referee and/or spectator.

    • Denies an opponent a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

    • Uses offensive or insulting language towards another player, coach, referee or spectator.

    • Making threatening gestures against other players, coaches, referees and/or spectators.

  • Players may receive a red card and a two-game suspension for the following first offenses:

    • Violent conduct.

    • Serious foul play.

    • Use of language that rises to a level of being abusive towards another player, coach, referee or spectator.

  • Any player found to be playing illegally after a red card violation in the current match, or while on red card suspension from a previous match, will automatically be suspended for a minimum of two additional games succeeding the original suspension.

  • Fighting and/or other physical altercations will not be tolerated. In the event any player, coach or spectator is found guilty of pushing, striking, spitting, physical abuse, or threatening physical abuse, in any form, at another player, coach, spectator or referee before, during or after the match will be subject to a minimum one-year suspension, up to a lifetime ban at the discretion of league officials.
